Ready-to-wear (amour prêt-à-porter)

You move through this world
With serious, graceful intent
A plan to honestly connect
Hoping she would not become
Another object to possess
Items and idols lost
To shatter when they disenchant
Finally realizing the cost

If she could see you now
After all these years have passed
Her eyes weighed with sorrow
Love was driving too fast
One simply can't exit
To walk around and see the damage
When hearts have crashed
You can't afford to fix this
Stranded at last

You put on your clothes
With elegance of style
Minding the way it feels
Past double stitched seams
Which won't easily undo
As buttons of a blouse
Or the fabric of a soul
Crushed under fingertips

In a mirror reflected shells
Conceal our innermost condition
We crumble like castles
Whose walls left standing
Betray the lack of life within
In a measure of a kingdom
Which thrived where we now stand
And in these ruins
We live the best we can
